Hippolyte: French name, American attitude

Last week, we tested the newly reopened Hippolyte restaurant in Lyon. If you’re looking for a laid-back setting, friendly service and simple good food then this place is for you.

We arrived early and weren’t quite ready for dinner so we decided to order the hummus appetizer to have over a glass of Côte du Rhone wine, fresh, tasty and healthy. The staff didn’t rush us to order our main dish which was a pleasant surprise given how popular this restaurant hase become since reopening recently.

Caesar salads have become quite the popular dish in France and I am a huge fan of the dish but have had very few that are authentic in taste and composition, as the ones found in the US. This one was was definitely in the top three, if not the runner up. Perfectly crunchy salad, the right amount of parmesan and dressing, and crispy if not a bit too fried chicken. But quite a tasty and delicious meal.

veal-milaneseMy partner had the veal Milanese with sautéed potatoes. Crispy, tender and moist, a perfect dish.

Though the french toast looked incredible, we opted out of desert, too full from our meal. But we will definitely be back very soon to try it out.

All in all, the relaxed and welcoming staff and non-pretentious tasty dishes makes for a great address if you’re ever in Lyon and don’t want to go to a bouchon.

Word of advice, reserve, the restaurant is small and fills up very fast.
