Located just one hour outside of Lyon, the Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat should be on everyone’s bucket list of natural parks to visit in France. Straddling the Loire and Rhône departments, the park is surrounded on the eastern side by the very reputable Rhône Valley wine country, home of the prestigious Côte Rotie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph wines as well as a short distant from the Croze Hermitage and Hermitage vineyards.

The park offers many activities including hiking in the warmer months and skiing in the wintertime. Down in the valley, the grass was still a vibrant and lush green but a couple hundred meters above, the scenery was quite different. We originally planned a short hike to go admire the many views that the peaks have to offer of the Monts du Pilat but we were quickly stopped by the abundant and sudden snow and opted for a walk through the fields instead. The remnants of the beautiful fall foliage colors were still visible through the snow and made for a beautiful afternoon activity.
